Privacy Policy
Effective date: May 23, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how the Upkeep app ("Upkeep", "the app", "we", "us") handles information. Upkeep is published by [Company name — to be finalized].
Upkeep is built to be private by design. We do not have any servers, accounts, or backend that receive your data. Almost everything the app does happens entirely on your device.
The short version
Upkeep has no user accounts and no login.
Your vehicles, maintenance schedules, service history, fuel logs, documents, and receipt photos are stored only on your device.
We do not collect analytics, we do not use any advertising or tracking SDKs, and we do not sell or share your data — because we never receive it in the first place.
The app makes exactly one type of outbound network request: an anonymous, on-demand safety-recall lookup you explicitly trigger (details below).
What data Upkeep stores, and where
All of the following is created by you and saved locally on your device using Apple's on-device storage (SwiftData). It never leaves your device except through actions you take yourself:
Vehicle details — nickname, make, model, year, color, VIN (optional), current mileage, and notes.
Maintenance items — service names and intervals (miles/time).
Service history — dates, mileage, cost, vendor, notes, and any receipt photos you attach.
Fuel entries — dates, odometer, volume, cost, and notes.
Documents — registration/insurance/inspection/warranty entries and their expiry dates.
Preferences — appearance, reminder settings (stored in the system's standard preferences storage on your device).
We never transmit this data to [Company name — to be finalized] or to any third party.
iCloud and device backups
Upkeep does not run its own cloud service and does not sync your data to a [Company name — to be finalized] server. However, because your data lives on your device, it may be included in backups you control:
If you have iCloud Backup or encrypted device backups enabled, your Upkeep data may be backed up as part of your device, the same as other apps. That backup is governed by Apple's iCloud terms and privacy policy, not by us, and we have no access to it.
If you use the in-app Back up all data / Export features, the app creates a file (JSON, CSV, or PDF) and hands it to the standard iOS share sheet. Where that file goes — Files, iCloud Drive, AirDrop, email — is your choice. We never see it.
The one network call: safety-recall lookup
Upkeep includes an optional feature to check open safety recalls for a vehicle. When — and only when — you tap Check safety recalls, the app sends your vehicle's make, model, and year to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) public recalls API (api.nhtsa.gov) and displays the results.
This request is anonymous: it contains only make/model/year. It does not include your name, your VIN, any device identifier, or any account (there is no account).
It is on demand: nothing is sent unless you tap the button.
NHTSA is a U.S. government agency. Their handling of the request is governed by their own policies. We do not add tracking to the request and we do not log it.
What we do NOT do
We do not collect or transmit personal data to our own servers (we have none).
We do not use analytics, crash-reporting, advertising, or attribution SDKs.
We do not track you across apps or websites. Upkeep's NSPrivacyTracking flag is set to false and the app declares no collected data types in its App Store privacy manifest.
We do not request access to your contacts, location, microphone, or other sensitive system data. (Adding a receipt photo uses the system photo picker, which does not grant the app broad photo-library access.)
Notifications
If you enable maintenance reminders, Upkeep schedules local notifications on your device. These are generated and delivered on-device and are not sent through any push server.
Children's privacy
Upkeep does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13. Because the app has no servers and no accounts, no personal information is transmitted to us.
Your control over your data
Because your data is local, you are always in control:
Export it at any time (JSON / CSV / PDF) from Settings.
Delete all of it at any time with Delete all data in Settings, or by deleting the app, which removes its on-device data.
Changes to this policy
If we change how Upkeep handles information, we will update this policy and the effective date above, and (where appropriate) note it in the app or its App Store release notes.
